Very large hardwood deck made in a garden in Newick

In the lower pictures, bits of the old original deck can be seen. This was unribbed and unspaced softwood and was not in very good condition. The owners wanted a new deck and decided upon yellow balau hardwood. To support this kind of weight we had to make a very solid sub-structure. The posts actually rest on the sand stone which is a major feature of this garden (see the rockery elsewhere in the portfolio) and are then concreted.
After a few years, the deck has weathered into a browny grey colour which almost exactly matches the terrace now laid around it and shown on another page on this site.
At the same time, it was discovered that the old pergola posts were rotting so we had to replace nearly the whole structure without disturbing the mature Wisteria and Clematis which were already there.
Drainage is incorporated under the deck to protect the adjacent swimming pool from contamination with dirty water.
After construction, all 4,500 screw holes were filled and then sanded and the whole deck was oiled. This project was completed in early 2004.
